To Produce these illustrations, artists were dispatched to various locations throughout the world to draw what they observed "from nature". The drawings, along with narrative accounts were sent back to the publisher and engraving staff on the East Coast. where it was engraved on highly polished blocks of wood. This wood engraving took dozens of hours of skilled labor to produce. The wood engraving and body type were assembled, then finally printed and sold as the weekly newspaper.
