002jpn: 1870 Scene: Shampooing in Japan. Engraved view of a Japanese lady preparing to have her hair washed, with several attendants and a musician looking on. From the May 14, 1870 issue of Every Saturday, a popular 19th century news weekly. 11x16 in. $30



003jpn: 1902: Japanese Women Entertaining British and Japanese Naval Officers. This is an antique halftone print from the August 30, 1902 issue of The Graphic, a British news weekly. Title is "The Anglo-Japanese Alliance: An Entertainment Given by Officers of the Japanese squadron to the Officers of the British Squadron." Beneath the image is a short article by one of the British officers, describing the scene. 11x16 in. $30



005jpn: 1884 Map of Japan, published by A & C Black of Edinburgh Scotland. Provinces within the country are colored separately. The bottom right corner contains a small inset map of the area around Tokyo. 13x17 in. $50



007jpn: Map of Japan and Korea from the 1897 Edition of the Century Atlas. Detailed, color map shows cities, towns, provincial borders and geographical features. The right side contains inset maps of the Kurile Islands, Liu-Kiu Islands and Formosa (Taiwan). 12x16 in. $30



008jpn: 1867 Japanese Scenes: Prince's Summer Palace, and Army Officer in Armor. Two beautiful engraved views from the Feb. 2, 1867 issue of the Illustrated London News. Top view is titled "The Summer Palace of Prince Satzuma." Bottom view is "Japanese High Officer and Sword-Bearer in Armor." There is a black ink stain on the edge of the left margin, but the image is not affected. 11x16 in. $30



009jpn: 1865 Military Scene in Yokohama. Engraved image from the Jan. 7, 1865 issue of the Illustrated London News. Title is "Review of British and Japanese Troops at Yokohama." A group of spectators from both nations are standing in the foreground. 11x16 in. $30



011jpn: 1870 Japanese Ladies Print. Beautiful engraved print published in an 1870 issue of Harper's Weekly shows two Japanese ladies on the streets of Japan. Lovely print is accompanied by short text. 11x16 in. $30



012jpn: 1860 Japanese Priest and Temple. Handsome engraving from an 1860 issue of Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper shows a Japanese priest and the interior of a temple in Japan. Print is accompanied by an article that describes the presentation of gifts from the US to Japanese authorities. 11x16 in. $30

015jpn: 1891 Japanese Festival Scene. Large, engraved print published in an 1891 issue of Harper's Weekly shows crowds gathered during a Japanese Festival. The title is, "Japanese Festival To Hoko Dashi." 16x22 in. $50



016jpn: 1854 Mount of Pleasure View. Wood engraving published in an 1854 issue of Gleason's Pictorial shows Pauromama, or Mount of Pleasure, in Japan. 11x16 in. $30


017jpn: 1868 Scenes of Japanese Revolution. Two wood engravings published in an 1868 issue of Harper's Weekly show a view of Yokohama, Japan and the Palace of the Tycoon in Jeddo, Japan's capital city. 11x16 in. $30
 


018jpn: 1854 Japanese Views and Court Dresses. Large, old wood engraved print published in an 1854 issue of Gleason's Pictorial Drawing-Room Companion shows views of Jeddo and a Dutch factory at Firato. Other wood engravings illustrate the court dresses of Japan. 15x22 in. $50


019jpn: 1860 Japanese Mother and Child. Beautiful, color lithograph published as an illustration to a book circa 1850 shows a portrait of mother and child in their native Japanese dress. The print was based on the Mathew Perry expedition of 1853. 8x11 in. $50


020jpn: 1860 Delivery of President's Letter. Attractive lithograph published as an illustration to a book shows a letter from the US President being delivered to Japanese authorities. This print is based on the Mathew Perry expedition of 1853-1854 that forced Japan into trade and diplomatic relations with the west after two centuries of isolation. Light age spots around the border do not detract from the print. 8x11 in. $50



021jpn: 1860 Japanese Funeral. Impressive lithograph published as an illustration to a book circa 1860 shows a Japanese funeral procession at Simoda. The print was based on observations during the Mathew Perry expedition. 9x11 in. $40

024jpn: 1860 Portrait of Japanese Authority. Lithograph published as an illustration to a book in 1860 shows a portrait of Kura Kawa Kahai, the prefect of the town of Simoda. The print was based on observations during the Mathew Perry expedition. 9x11 in. $40



025jpn: 1860 Yokohama Scene. Lithograph published as an illustration to a book in 1860 shows American presents arriving at Yokohama. The title is, "Delivering of the American Presents at Yokohama." The delivery of presents was meant as a gesture of good will to help open up trade with Japan. The print is based on the Mathew Perry expedition in 1853-1854 that forced Japan into trade and diplomatic relations with the West after two centuries of isolation. 9x11 in. $40



026jpn: 1855: Fire Fighters in Japan. Interesting lithograph from the 1855 U.S. Government report of Commodore Perry's expedition to Japan. Title of the scene is "Fire Company's House & Engine, Yokuhama." Commodore Perry was sent to Japan in a successful effort to establish trading ties with the Japanese government. The report from his voyage contained many lithographed views of the Japanese people and countryside. 8x10 in. $60

104jpn: 1908: An Example to Russia: House-Cleaning by Law. Remarkable Precautions Taken against the Plague in Japan. This print is from the October 3, 1908 edition of The Illustrated London News. The two photos show: Officers of the law as housemaids: The contents of the Japanese shops and residences turned into the streets while the buildings are cleaned by the authorities. It shows scenes of the Liao-Hsi Mountains (Manchuria), The Han River (Korea), The Harbor (Port Arthur), The Liao River, (Newchwang), H.M.S. "Vestal," in Liao River, street scene in Newchwang, Russia's Armored cruisers coaling at Port Arthur, looking south across Port Arthur and a map showing the Scene of the War Crisis in the Far East. 202jpn: 1856 Perry Expedition Japan Print. This lithographed print is from the US Government's official 1856 report on Commodore Perry's 1852 expedition to Japan. The print is titled "Japanese Soldiers at Yokuhama." It shows a group of Japanese soldiers on horseback and on foot, gathered together and talking. This print is in very good condition. There is a small brown spot in the bottom margin, but the image is not affected. Size is 9x11 in. $50



204jpn: 1856 Perry Expedition Japan Print. This lithographed print is from the US Government's official 1856 report on Commodore Perry's 1852 expedition to Japan. The print is titled "Wrestlers at Yokuhama." Two Japanese wrestlers are shown competing in front of an audience of Japanese and American onlookers. Excellent condition. 9x11 in. $60
