002phys: 1857 Home Exercises for Women. Article with engraved illustrations from the July 11, 1857 issue of Harper’s Weekly. Title is "Home Exercises." The article describes how each exercise should be done, and suggests doing them to the musical accompaniment of a piano. It warns that every traveler who visits the United States comments on the physical deterioration of our people, and urges fashionable American ladies to set an example by doing regular exercises. 11x16 in. 003phys: 1918 Physical Fitness Ad: Strongfortism. Full page ad for Lionel Strongfort’s exercise program, from the February 1918 issue of Physical Culture magazine. Strongfort, whose photo is on the left side, sells his program by urging out-of-shape readers to become real men; not misfits. A coupon in the lower right corner contains a list of problems that Strongfort can cure: Flat Chest, Torpid Liver, Despondency, Youthful Errors, etc. etc. 9x12 in. SOLD

005phys: 1902 Ad for Swoboda Exercise System. Full page ad for the Swoboda System of Physiological Exercise, created by strongman Alois P. Swoboda. 009phys: 1913 Fitness Article: Women Lack Grace. This article is actually a full page ad from the May 1913 issue of Sunset magazine, for a book titled "The Body Beautiful." The book was written by "Miss Kellermann," who is described by the article’s author as the Perfect Woman. The author of the article states that modern women do not get proper exercise, and are therefore either too corpulent or too angular. Following the instructions in Miss Kellermann’s book will enable all women to attain physical perfection. 7x10 in. $20

This hand colored set of six engravings shows: the game from the gallery, serving the ball, running the reach, scooping, seeing the game through the glass, and keeping score. 200phys: Rare Old New York Sports: Track and Field. Hand colored engraving from the Oct. 6, 1891 issue of Once A Week, titled "New York: Grand Carnival of Sports of Manhattan Athletic Club, at Manhattan Field, September 19, 1891." In the center, there is an image of four men at the starting line of a foot race. A man behind them is preparing to fire the starting gun. Around the center image, there are smaller scenes of athletes participating in other sporting events: hurdles, shot put, cycling, and swimming.
