006thnk: 1863 The First Thanksgiving by Nast. Impressive, large hand-colored engraving by Thomas Nast, the most famous political cartoonist of the nineteenth century. Published in Harper’s Weekly, December 5, 1863. Title is "Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 1863." Featured is an image of Columbia, a woman who appears frequently in Nast’s work, representing all that is good and virtuous about America. She is kneeling at the "Union Altar," praying for peace. Around the main image are six smaller scenes of people praying: 1) Union soldiers 2) Washington and Lincoln; 3) Navy sailors; 4) Small-town church-goers; 5) Former slaves; and 6) Farmers.
